Torah Portion: Genesis 25:19 - 28:9 1: 25:19-26:5 (21
p'sukim) Haftarah: Malachi 1:1 - 2:7Reading One 20 And Laughter was forty years old when he took Dazes, the daughter of Mighty Destruction, the Highlander of High Plateau and the sister of Whitey the Highlander. 21 And Laughter Pleaded with Eternal for his woman, because she was barren: and Eternal was entreated of him, and Dazes his woman conceived. 22 And the sons struggled together within her; and she said, ‘If this be so, why is it? And she came to inquire of Eternal. 23 And Eternal said unto her, ‘Two nations are in your womb and two kinds of people shall be separated from your abdomen and the one people shall be stronger than the other people and the elder will serve the younger’. 24 And when her days to give birth were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her abdomen. 25 And the first one came out ruddy, all over like a hairy garment; and they called his name Hairy. 26 And after that his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Hairy's heel; and his name was called Supplanter: and Laughter was sixty years old when she gave birth to them. 27 And the boys grew: and Hairy was a skillful hunter, a man of the earth and Supplanter was a strong and wholesome man, camping out in tents. 28 And Laughter loved Hairy, because he had a taste for his wild game: but Dazes loved Supplanter. 29 And Supplanter was boiling up some stew when Hairy came from the field nearly faint: 30 And Hairy said to Supplanter, Feed me, I pray you, with that same red stew because I am about to faint: for this he was called Red. 31 And Supplanter answered, ‘Today then, sell me your birthright. 32 And Hairy countered, Egad, I am about to die and what is my birthright to me? 33 So Supplanter said, ‘Then swear it to me today; at that he swore it to him: and he sold his birthright to Supplanter. 34 Then Supplanter gave Hairy bread and pea soup. he ate and drank, and rose up, and went his way: in this Hairy showed his contempt for his birthright. CHAPTER 26 1
And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that
was in the days of Father of Nations. And Laughter went to My Father Is
King, the king of the Immigrants to the 2 And Eternal appeared to him, and said, “Do not go down into Double Straits; dwell in the land which I shall tell you of: 3 Abide in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you; for to you and to your seed, I will give all these countries and I will stand good to the oath which I swore to Father of Nations, your father; 4 And I will make your seed to be multiplied as the stars of heaven and will give to your seed all these lands. And in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 Because Father of Nations heard My voice with understanding, then kept My injunctions, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.” Gen 26:6-12 6
And Laughter dwelled in the 7 And when the men of the place asked him about his woman he said, ‘She is my sister’: for he feared to say, ‘She is my woman; lest the men of the place should kill me because of Dazes; because she is easy to cast eyes upon’. 8 And after Laughter had been in the Lodging Place a long time, My Father Is King, king of the Immigrants looked out from a window and beheld, Laughter laughing and sporting with Dazes his woman. 9 And My Father Is King called Laughter, and said, “I see she is obviously your woman. How and why do you say, ‘She is my sister’”? Now Laughter replied, ‘I declared this because I feared that I would die because of her. 10 And My Father Is King said, ‘What is this you have done to us? One of my people may have had casual sex with your woman and you would have brought guilt upon us. 11 And My Father Is King charged all his people, saying, ‘He that touches this man or his woman shall surely be put to death’. 12 Then Laughter sowed seed in that land, and received in the same year a hundredfold because Eternal blessed him. Gen 26:13-22 13 And this man increased, and continued to walk and grow until he became exceedingly praiseworthy: 14 for he had acquired flocks, and purchased herds, and great store of servants: and the Immigrants envied him. 15 All the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of his father, Father of Nations, the Immigrants had clogged them by filling them with rubbish and debris. 16 Then My Father Is King said to Laughter, Go away from living among us; because you are so much stronger than we are. 17
And Laughter walked away from there. He pitched his tent in the
valley of the 18 Then Laughter dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of his father, Father of Nations; for the Immigrants had stopped them after the death of Father of Nations: and he called them by their names, the names which his father had named them. 19 And Laughter's servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of springing water. 20
And the shepherds of the 21 And they dug another well, and argument ensued for that one also: and he called the name of it Strife. 22 And he moved on from there, and dug another well; and they did not quarrel for that: and he called the name of it Broadway; saying, ‘For now Eternal has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land. 23 And he went up from there to the Well of Oath. 24 And in a vision Eternal appeared to him that very night, and said, I am the Mighty of your father, Father of Nations: do not fear, because I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for the sake of my servant, Father of Nations. 25 And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of Eternal, YHWH and pitched his tent there: and there Laughter's servants dug a well. 26
Then My Father Is King came to him from the 27 And Laughter said unto them, ‘On what account do you come to me, seeing you hate me, and have sent me away from among your people?’ 28 And they said, ‘We have seen that Eternal was with you: and we said, Let there be now an oath between us, even between you and I, and let us then make a covenant with you; 29 That you will do us no wrong, as we have not touched you, and as we have done nothing but good to you, and have sent you away in peace: for you are now the blessed of Eternal. 30 And he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 And they rose up early in the morning, and pledged an oath as a man to his brother. Then Laughter sent them away, and they walked away from him in peace. 32 And it came to pass the same day, that Laughter's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said unto him, ‘We have found water’. 33 And he called it Oath: therefore the name of the city is the Well of Oath until this day. 34 And Hairy was forty years old when he took the woman called Praised, the daughter of My Well the Terrorist, and Spice the daughter of Mighty Oak the Terrorist: 35 Which grieved the spirits of Laughter and Dazes. CHAPTER 27 2 And he said, Consider now, I am old and even though I do not know the day of my death, 3 yet I ask you, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and catch me some game. 4 Then prepare for me some delectable meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, so that I may eat; that my soul may bless you before I die. 5 And Dazes heard when Laughter spoke to Hairy his son. And Hairy went out to the field to hunt for some game to bring in. 6 And Dazes spoke unto Supplanter her son, saying, ‘listen, I heard your father speak to Hairy your brother and he said, 7 bring me venison, and make me some delectable meat, that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of Eternal before my death. 8 (She said) Now therefore, my son, obey my voice, do that which I command you. 9 Go now to the flock, and fetch me from there two good kids of the goats; and I will make them delectable meat for your father, such as he loves: 10 And you shall bring it to your father so that he may eat, and so that he may bless you before his death. 11 And Supplanter said to Dazes his mother, Behold, Hairy my brother is a rough man, and I am smooth: 12 Perhaps my father will touch me, and I then shall seem to him a deceiver; and then I shall bring a curse upon myself, and not a blessing. 13 And his mother said unto him, ‘then your curse shall be on me, my son: only obey my voice, and go get them for me’. 14 And he went and took them in hand and brought them to his mother: and his mother cooked the delectable meat, just as his father loved. 15 And Dazes took some clothing of her eldest son Hairy, which were with her in the house, and put them on Supplanter her younger son: 16 And she put the skins of the kid goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck as well: 17 And she gave the delectable meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of Supplanter, her son. 18 And he came to his father, saying, ‘My father’, to which he replied ‘Here I am and who are you, my son? 19 And Supplanter said to his father, I am Hairy your firstborn; I have done just what you had asked me to do: arise, I pray you, abide and devour my game, that your soul may bless me. 20 And Laughter asked his son, ‘How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?’ And he said, ‘Because Eternal your Mighty presented it to me’. 21 And Laughter said unto Supplanter, Come near, I pray you, that I may touch you, my son, to see whether you are my very Hairy son or not. 22 And Supplanter went near to Laughter his father; and he touched him, and said, ‘The voice is Supplanter's voice, but the hands are Hairy. 23 And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Hairy's hands: so he blessed him. 24 And he said, ‘Are you my very son Hairy?’ And he said, ‘I am’. 25 And he said, ‘Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's game, that my soul may bless you. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank. 26 And Laughter, his father, said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son. 27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which Eternal has blessed: 28 Therefore may the Mighty One give you of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine: 29 May nations serve you, and peoples bow down to you: be master over your brethren, and let your mother's sons bow down to you: cursed be every one that curses you, and blessed be he that blesses you. 30 After Laughter finished blessing him and Supplanter had scarcely left his father's presence when his brother Hairy came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, "My father, sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing." 32 His father Laughter asked him, "Who are you?" "I am your son," he answered, "your firstborn, Hairy." 33 Laughter trembled violently and said, "Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him-- and indeed he will be blessed!" 34 When Hairy heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, "Bless me—bless me as well, my father!" 35 But he said, "Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing." 36 Hairy said, "He is rightly named Supplanter. He has deceived me these two times: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!" Then he asked, "Have you reserved no blessing for me?" 37 Laughter answered Hairy, "I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?" 38 Hairy said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me as well, my father!" Then Hairy wept aloud. 39 His father Laughter answered him, "Your dwelling will be away from the earth's richness, away from the dew of heaven above. 40 You will live by the sword and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck." 41 Hairy held a grudge against Supplanter because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, "The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Supplanter." 42 When Dazes was told what her older son Hairy had said, she sent for her younger son Supplanter and said to him, "Your brother Hairy is consoling himself with the thought of killing you. 43 Now then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to my brother Whitey in Mountaineer. 44 Stay with him for a while, until your brother's fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him, I'll send word for you to come back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?" 46 Then Dazes said to Laughter, "I'm disgusted with living because of these Terrorist women. If Supplanter takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Terrorist women like these, my life will not be worth living." 1
And Laughter called Supplanter, and blessed him, and charged him,
and said to him, You shall not take a woman of the daughters of 2 Arise, go to the High Plateau, to the house of Mighty Destruction your mother's father; and take you a woman from there of the daughters of Whitey your mother's brother. 3 And may the Mighty Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may become a multitude of people; 4 And I give you the blessing of the Father of Nations, to you, and to your seed with you; that you may inherit the land wherein you are now a stranger, which Mighty promised to the Father of Nations. Seventh Gen 28:5-9 5 And Laughter sent away Supplanter: and he went to the High Plateau to her brother Whitey, son of Mighty Destruction the Highlander, the brother of Dazes who was Supplanter's and Hairy's mother. 6 When Hairy saw that Laughter had blessed Supplanter, and sent him away to High Plateau, to take a woman from there; and that as he blessed him and commissioned him, saying, ‘You shall not take a woman of the daughters of the Lowlanders; 7 And that Supplanter obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to High Plateau; 8
And Hairy seeing that the daughters of 9 Hairy then went unto Heard of Mighty, and took Sickness the daughter of Heard of Mighty the son Father of Nations and the sister of Fruitfulness, to be his woman. Haftarah:Malachi 1:1 - 2:71
