Does YHWH Chastise His People With Either a Drought or a Flood?

We have been going through weather circumstances in the recent months that we are sure we have never seen before, many weather records have been broken and they are not limited to small areas but world wide.

Unprecedented is the scale of tornados that have scraped the works of men’s hands from the earth. Floods and droughts have diminished the food supply.

Some people say they see this as perhaps a punishment or an eye opener from YHWH. Others say what a foolish a simplistic view this is and that it is just ‘mother nature’ responding to the effect caused by man kind with our world, our universe. Natural responses to ‘global warming’, destruction of our forests, methane, carbon dioxide, other fluorocarbons , our cars, our workplaces, our homes are all to blame. We surely are not living in this frightening circumstance due to disobedience. That is such an archaic idea.

Divrei Yamim Bet 2 (Chr) 7:11-14

11        When Shlomoh (Solomon) had finished the temple of YHWH and the royal palace and had succeeded in carrying out all he had in mind to do in the temple of YHWH and in his own palace,

12        YHWH appeared to him at night and said: "I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for Myself as a temple for sacrifices.

13        "When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people,

14        if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Devariym (Deu) 11:16-17

16        Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and you turn aside, and serve false gods, and worship them;

17        And then YHWH's wrath will be kindled against you, and He shall shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain and that the land does not yield her fruit; lest you perish quickly from off the good land which YHWH gives you.

Melakhiym Alef (IKi) 8:35

35        When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain, because they have sinned against You; if they pray toward this place and confess Your name and turn from their sin, when You afflict them:

 Then rain will come...

Melakhiym Alef (IKi) 17:7

7          And it happened after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

Divrei Yamim Bet (2Chr) 6:26

26        When the heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you; yet if they pray toward this place, and confess your name, and turn from their sin, when You afflict them;

YesheYahu (Isa) 5:6

6          And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor dug; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

Without water, all the pruning, digging out briers and thorns in the world will not make a garden grow. Let us repent and ask for water in due season, enough but not too much,

YeremeYahu (Jer) 14:2-4

2          " Yahudah (Judah) mourns, her cities languish; they wail for the land and a cry goes up from Yerushalayim ( Jerusalem ).

3          The nobles send their servants for water; they go to the cisterns but find no water. They return with their jars unfilled; dismayed and despairing, they cover their heads.

4          The ground is cracked because there is no rain in the land; the farmers are dismayed and cover their heads.

ZecharYah (Zech) 14:17-19

17        And it shall be, that whosoever will not come up of all the families of the earth to Yerushalayim ( Jerusalem ) to worship the King, YHWH of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.

18        And if the family of Mitzrayim (Egypt) do not go up, it shall follow that they will have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith YHWH will smite the heathen that do not come up to keep Sukkoth (the feast of tabernacles).

19        This shall be the punishment of Mitzrayim ( Egypt ), and the punishment of all nations that do not come up to keep Sukkoth (the feast of tabernacles or booths).

Devariym (Deu) 8:14-15

14        Then your heart be lifted up, and thou forget YHWH your Mighty One, who brought you forth out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), from the house of bondage;

15        Who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein there were fiery serpents, scorpions and drought. When where there was no water; Who brought forth water out of the flint rock; (Hint: YHWH gave water to His people)

YesheYahu (Isa) 58:10-12

10        And if you will furnish out of your inner being to care for the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted person; then shall light rise in obscurity and you darkness be as the noonday:

Light shining in light is sometimes very difficult to see but walk out on your porch when it is almost totally dark, light a tiny light and it can dispel much darkness.

11        And YHWH shall guide you continually, and satisfy your inner being in drought, He will make have fat on your bones:  then you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.

12        And you shall build up the old, desolate waste places: you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called, “The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in”.

YermeYahu (Jer) 50:34-38

34        Their Redeemer is strong; YHWH of hosts is His name: He shall thoroughly plead their cause, that He may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon .

35        A sword is upon the Chaldeans, says YHWH, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon , and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.

36        A sword is upon the liars; and they shall still be foolish: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.

37        A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed.

38        A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.

A sword is upon Babylon (Confusion) and her residents, the princes and her wise men. A sword upon liars and they shall be dismayed and shattered.

A sword upon the horses, the chariots, the mingled people and we see that these mighty men will become as women and shall be robbed.

All of these foregoing sound dreadful but verse 38 puts the cap on Babylons destruction: A drought, a dried well, creek, river or spring…all dried up. Thirst is a damning punishment. Man cannot survive without water. Why did YHWH exact this punishment? They were a land of ‘graven images’ and since they were giving their love and homage to idols, not YHWH, so they acted like mad men.

Chaggai (Hag) 1:9-11

9          You looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? says YHWH of hosts. Because of My house that is waste, and you run every man to his own house.

10        Therefore the heavens over you held back the dew and the earth has withheld her fruit.

11        And I called for a drought upon the land, upon the mountains, upon the corn, upon the new wine, upon the oil, upon that which the ground brings forth, upon men, upon cattle and upon all the labor of the hands.

No rain, no water, nothing to quench your thirst although your tongue clings to the roof of your mouth. No rain, no water, no food.

So tell me is good fresh, clean, life sustaining water a gift from YHWH our Creator? If you answer yes, then does it follow that when we are in rebellion, that precious gift may be rescinded unless and until we repent and move back to obedience?
